Did you know that an aligned smile is also good for your oral health? An aligned smile allows you to thoroughly clean your teeth and gums to prevent tooth decay and gum disease. Dr. James E. Gaff offers both Invisalign® and Six Month Smiles® to help our patients achieve straighter smiles in Jacksonville, Florida. Today, however, we are going to focus on Invisalign.

Invisalign® uses a series of clear aligners which gradually straighten your smile without wires and brackets. Our Dr. James E. Gaff team has been successfully helping patients straighten their smiles with Invisalign to improve the following oral conditions:

–Smile Gaps: Gaps in your smile left untreated may cause problems with your gums, including periodontal pockets, making you at higher risk of gum disease.

–Overbites: With an overbite, your upper teeth bite over your bottom teeth. Left untreated, this may cause gum irritation and the wearing down of the lower teeth, leaving you with painful jaw and joint problems.

–Underbites: Do your lower teeth stick out past your front teeth? If so, this may cause problems with the normal function of your front teeth or your molars. As the wear and tear on the teeth continue, you may experience eventual painful jaw and joint problems.

–Open bites: When some of your teeth fail to meet the opposite teeth, you may not be able to chew properly. Left uncorrected, you can end up with pain when you chew or problems with your speech. This can lead to TMJ (temporomandibular joint disorder).

–Crossbites:  If your jaws are both misaligned, you can end up with a crossbite. In a crossbite, one or more of your upper teeth can bite the inside of the lower teeth. Along with wear and tear on the enamel, this can also cause gum disease or bone loss.

–Overcrowding: If there is not enough room for the teeth to fit properly, this can lead to crooked teeth which invite gum disease and plaque buildup because of difficulty in brushing and flossing properly.

With Invisalign, you simply wear your aligners as scheduled, change them out as scheduled, and visit Dr. James E. Gaff every 2-3 weeks to make sure your smile is aligning correctly. Because you take the aligners out to eat, you can still enjoy your favorite foods without worry about harming brackets and wires or cleaning around them as you do with braces.
