When a patient is missing some or all of their natural teeth, Dr. James E. Gaff may recommend dentures in Jacksonville, Florida. Dentures are replacements for missing teeth that are removable for cleaning and sleeping. There are two main types of dentures: full and partial. Our dentist can help you decide which type of denture is best for you, based on whether some or all of your teeth need to be replaced.
Dentures are custom made for each patient’s mouth and depending on the patient’s needs, can be full or partial dentures. There are various types of dentures including:
- Partial – These dentures consist of replacement teeth attached to a pink or gum-colored plastic base. A metal framework attaches the dentures to your natural teeth or dental implant. Partial dentures may be an alternative to bridges.
- Conventional – Placed in your mouth after any remaining teeth are removed and tissues have healed. Healing time varies from patient to patient, and during this time, patients will be without teeth.
- Immediate – An immediate full denture is inserted immediately after remaining teeth are removed. The benefit is that patients will not have to go without teeth, but they will need to schedule a follow-up appointment to get their denture realigned, as the bone supporting the teeth reshapes as it heals.
- Implant Retained – Also known as an implant overdenture, these fit over your own remaining natural tooth roots or dental implants. The implant provides excellent stability and support for your denture.
