If you have a bad habit of nibbling on foreign objects or using your teeth as tools, you are at an increased risk of suffering a chipped tooth. Sometimes a chip can be repaired at Dr. James E. Gaff with a standard composite or amalgam filling. However, if the chip is in a critical location, such as the biting surface, Dr. James E. Gaff might recommend treating the tooth with a dental crown restoration.

This involves creating a near-perfect replica of the original tooth enamel layer. The crown itself is hollow and it will eventually anchor onto an abutment that is formed out of the dentin, pulp, and root of the tooth.

Once the abutment has been prepared, Dr. James E. Gaff will make a detailed impression of the area. It will be sent to a dental lab where your new crown will be custom made. In the interim, a temporary crown will be cemented over the abutment to protect it.

We will call you back in for a follow-up appointment when the final crown is ready. The temporary crown will be removed and your new crown will be cemented securely into place.

If you live in the Jacksonville, Florida, area and you have a chipped tooth, you should call 904-641-2655 to have it treated and repaired at Dr. James E. Gaff.
